Open Access and Subscription Only Policy

Imprint Academic offers two access methods for authors and their articles: Subscription Only and Gold Open Access (CC-BY) .

Subscription Only

This is the ‘traditional’ method for authors to access and disseminate their own journal articles, and is covered by our copyright transfer agreement (which all authors taking up this option must sign prior to publication).

By signing the Copyright Transfer Agreement you still retain substantial rights, such as self-archiving.

Authors may self-archive the author’s accepted/published manuscript of their articles on their own websites following an embargo period of 24 months after official publication. Authors may also deposit this version of the article in any repository, provided it is only made publicly available 24 months after official publication or later. He/she may not use the publisher’s version (the final article), which is posted on Ingenta Connect (subscription only), for the purpose of self-archiving or deposit. Furthermore, the author may only post his/her version provided acknowledgement is given to the original source of publication and a link is inserted to the published article on Ingenta.

Prior versions of the article published on non-commercial pre-print servers like can remain on these servers. The final published version (in PDF or HTML/XML format) cannot be used for this purpose. Acknowledgement needs to be given to the final publication and a link should be inserted to the published article on Ingenta.

Gold Open Access

For those authors who seek to widely disseminate their work immediately upon publication, this can be achieved by paying a fee on a per article basis.

In these instances the final published PDF version can be archived in institutional or funding repositories and can be made publicly accessible immediately upon receipt of the fee. The article will also appear as open access on Ingenta, meaning that readers do not need a subscription to view the paper there.

If authors choose gold open access the copyright remains with them, the authors of the article. The typeset PDF itself is still the property of Imprint Academic.

How to Order Gold Open Access

When you receive the copyright transfer agreement by email, you should notify the editor that you wish your article to be part of our gold open access (CC-BY) programme. Once the editor has this information you will be sent an invoice to be paid immediately. You will also receive a CC-BY licensing agreement which you need to sign and return along with the fee. The licensing agreement replaces the copyright form referred to under the ‘subscription only’ option. Once the fee is paid, the licensing agreement received, and the publication date is due, Imprint Academic will make the paper freely available on Ingenta and send you a final version of the PDF for you to publish on your institution/funding repository.

Publication Fee

Publishing with gold open access involves a one-off publication fee of £1200 (excl. VAT), which can be paid by credit card or bank transfer (you are responsible for any fees this payment may be associated with).
