I don’t want to exaggerate; of course, we are often unsure of what another person is really thinking or feeling. We are not transparent to one another. But nor are we opaque as the Cartesian/materialist view would imply. There may be room for doubt about exactly what someone’s state of mind is, but there is no room for scepticism as to whether he has a mind.
